About Venus

Venus is shrouded by thick clouds of sulphuric acid and an atmosphere 90 times denser than Earth's. A runaway greenhouse effect keeps the surface at around 465 °C, hot enough to melt lead, day and night, pole to equator. The surface is a volcanic plain with vast lava flows and few impact craters, suggesting it was resurfaced within the last billion years. Venus rotates backwards compared with most planets, and so slowly that its day is longer than its year. It is the brightest natural object in our sky after the Sun and Moon.
